So after weeks of speculation and rumours, Ferrari has confirmed that Nigel Stepney is being charged with what can only be described as industrial espionage.
The Charge: Ferrari claim to have "proof that Stepney had been supplying technical information to a McLaren employee" ...
This cannot have come at a worse time for McLaren. The competition for the drivers’ championship has heated up and at Magny-Cours we saw a resurgent Ferrari team that dominated the race. McLaren is seemingly rattled by this fact, especially if you consider the fact that a few weeks back during testing at Silverstone, Ferrari were exceptionally quick round the track. This should make for a very exciting race weekend.
As for the espionage, a McLaren engineer has been suspended after investigators found that he was the recipient of technical information appertaining to team Ferrari. According to the BBC the engineer in receipt of these documents is thought to be Mike Coughlan chief designer at McLaren. The documents “Whilst McLaren has no involvement in the matter and condemns such actions it will fully co-operate with any investigation. The individual has in the meanwhile been suspended by the company pending a full and proper investigation of the matter.”
I know of people who wait to see the actions taken by the FIA once the police and courts are done with the investigation. What happens if an investigation does implicate McLaren?
This could negate all points scored at the
Pundits will wait for any punishment handed down to the offending team, because they believe that over the years the FIA has been comparatively lenient to the Ferrari team. Argh!!! who knows, all I know is that I want the title to be won fair and square.
